About the job

The holder of this post is responsible to patrol, inspect and maintain all aspects of the p/way and associated equipment within the country end depots. You will adhere to depot protection, safety, quality and environmental procedures, rules and regulations in force.

Your main responsibilities will be:

  • Carry out track patrols as directed by Depot Manager or Fleet Facilities Manager.
  • Carry out inspections as directed i.e. Points box etc.
  • Carry out repairs and any remedial work identified.
  • Work to laid down specifications.
  • Comply with rules and regulations.
  • Adhere to working instructions.
  • Advise of all work undertaken and any problems encountered promptly.
  • Report any defects found on the track or infrastructure whilst carrying out duties.
  • Complete all necessary paperwork including patrol sheets.
  • Work to be undertaken to comply with depot quality procedures.
  • Carry out vegetation clearance and weed killing applications as directed.
  • Work to be undertaken in a safe manner.
  • Carryout winter precautions within the depot as per local instructions.
  • Advise Fleet Facilities Manager of any problems or defects identified and work arising from the issues.
  • Work effectively as part of a team.

As a minimum, you will need to have:

  • Successful completion of training relevant to the job.
  • Passed out in Rules and Regulations.
  • Demonstrate ability to work on own initiative.

 Training & Qualifications

At SWR we believe in providing our staff with the best tools and training in order to carry out tasks to the best of their ability. Upon joining, you will attend practical courses at our training centre in Basingstoke where you will attain recognisable qualifications and information in the following areas:

  • Depot operating procedures and safety requirements.
  • Personal Track Safety
  • DC Electrified Lines.
  • Passed out in Rules and Regulations as required

About the location

Bournemouth Depot is home to a number of South Western Railway's fleet. The engineering team at the depot are currently responsible for numerous projects such as the major component overhaul work on the 159 fleet, the Desiro repaint on the class 444's and 450's and the latest modification project on our exciting new Arterio fleet that is set to transform travel on our suburban routes by offering customers much faster and more reliable journeys!

Working pattern

Working an average of 37 hours per week, typically: Monday to Friday 0700-1500
