About the job:

As a Rail Operator at South Western Railway, you will be at the heart of ensuring trains are safely and efficiently dispatched and stations are presented to the highest standards. You will provide the most up to date travel information for our customers and assist them in reaching their destinations safely and on time.   The holder of this post is responsible for cleaning and presentation of stations, ensuring stations are clean and presented to the highest standard across your designated region of stations.

You will use only approved equipment, chemicals and wear the appropriate personal protective equipment in accordance with the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH)

Your main responsibilities will be:

  • Ensure your personal safety and that of others, including that of visitors and contractors at all times.
  • Provide a safe, clean and well-presented customer environment, ensuring that the tasks detailed in the cleaning schedules are maintained to a high standard.
  • You will be safely dispatching trains from the platform, ensuring all customers are clear of the train whilst observing the correct signal is showing. You will need normal colour vision for this position.
  • You will be required to use a company vehicle to travel around the network and must have a full & clean driving license
  • Assist traincrew and station staff in undertaking emergency procedures and evacuation procedures when required.
  • Provide a safe, courteous and helpful service at all times.
  • Comply with the Rules as defined in Network Rail Group Standard, South Western Railway Employee Handbook, other regulations and Instructions, Group Standards and Legislation.
  • To assist customers as appropriate, especially those with special needs or at times of service disruption.
  • Provide managers and supervisors with proactive information that delivers higher and improved cleanliness standards.
  • Undertake cleaning of biological hazards.
  • Observe COSHH Regulations in place.
  • Complete paperwork as required, detailing and signing for all work carried out.
  • Dispose of waste, including bio-waste and sharps in accordance with local instructions.
  • Advise Manager of any problems or defects identified.
  • To undertake additional tasks as required by the local manager applicable to the role.
  • Wear uniform (including name badge) and safety clothing as supplied, ensuring that your standard of appearance complies with the company standard and is high at all times.

As a minimum, you will need to be:

  • Able to travel to your location of work within 60 minutes, for all shift times.
  • Must be able to drive a vehicle, so a full clean driving license is required
  • Organised and efficient and able to cope with repetitive tasks under pressure at times.
  • A great communicator and can talk to anyone
  • Passionate about doing the right thing – nothing is too much trouble.
  • Competent in the ability to use technology. 
  • Confidence to make regular live announcements at your station.
  • Able to distinguish colours with normal colour vision
  • All new entrants are required to undergo a pre-employment medical that includes an alcohol & drug screen

Applicants who require a visa must have 6 months remaining at the time of their appointment. Training is full time and you must be able to commit to this.

Working pattern:

Our customers need us all day, every day (except Christmas day) and as part of the stations team, you'll need to able to work shifts at all times of the day and on every day of the week.

On average you will work 37 hours per week over 5 days per week, across a variety of shifts.

Typical shifts include:

Week 1: Mon - Fri 0830-1554
Week 2: Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri 0830-1554 and Sat 1100-1854

 

The Reward:

There may on occasions be the opportunity to work on rest days or to do overtime.  This may give the possibility of your overall pay being approximately £30,000 per annum plus regional allowance.
