About the job

To attend to any Mainline train service failures on all types of SWR rolling stock.  To service and repair rolling stock to specifications laid down by Southwestern Railway.  Adhere to local Depot protection, quality procedures and rules and regulations in force.

Your main responsibilities will be:

  • Supervise and mentor assistants and apprentices and provide on the job training where required.
  • Undertake fault finding on units to identify faults and solutions, using schematic, main wiring as well as pneumatic diagrams.
  • Carry out component changes as required.
  • Using the correct equipment undertake fault finding tasks.
  • Complete environmental examinations against detailed specifications, detailing any issues found.
  • Carry out repairs to all forms of SWR rolling stock.
  • Carry out cosmetic enhancements such as changing light fittings and upholstery, in addition to making safe faults that require further attention. 
  • Set up electrical equipment, using various types of test apparatus.
  • Undertake post repair testing.
  • Attend track calls outside the depot confines, as directed by Fleet Control.
  • Using appropriate paperwork record all work carried out and sign off for all work completed.
  • Compile formal reports detailing post incident / failure.
  • Obtain, use, care for and return all tools and equipment used.
  • Advise Fleet Control / Supervisor of any problems or defects identified and any work arising from the issues.
  • Work effectively as part of a team, taking the lead when required.
  • Undertake minor modifications and / or fleet improvement schemes as required.
  • Additional tasks as specified by Local Manager.
  • Principle accountabilities may differ from Depot to Depot.

You'll need to:

  • Comply with safety systems and responsibilities at all times.
  • Develop a pro-active approach to safety and quality issues.
  • Ensure your personal safety and that of others at all times.
  • Carry out emergency procedures when required.
  • Report any irregularities, faults or unusual occurrences in the prescribed manner, maintaining a written record.
  • Wear all Personal Protective Equipment provided.
  • Participate in all staff briefings to ensure you are informed of all relevant information.
  • Examine all notices, publications and instructions and ensure that any relevant information is disseminated and understood by staff under your control.
  • Ensure performance records are maintained.

You must have:

  • A level 3 electrical/mechanical qualification. 

About the location

Wimbledon Traincare Depot is a short walk from Wimbledon Park station and recently welcomed its first Class 701 train, marking a significant milestone in the £1bn transformation of suburban travel. Our current fleet operating on the suburban network (Class 455 and 458  trains) will be replaced over a 2 year period with 90 brand new 701's. Drivers, maintenance and other depot colleagues are currently in training to develop the new skills needed for the next generation of trains that will be fitted with all new modern technology. Wimbledon depot will eventually become the new maintenance home for the entire Class 701 fleet.

Working pattern

You will work an average of 37 hours per week across an average of 3.5 days.

4 on 4 off shift pattern working a mixture of days and nights; 0700-1900 / 1900-0700.
