About the job

To service maintain, repair and overhaul traction units, components and equipment to specifications laid down by South West Trains. Adhere to Depot Protection and Shunting responsibilities, Quality Procedures and rules and regulations in force.

Your main responsibilities will be:

• Undertake routine electrical and mechanical maintenance of components and systems, in accordance with exam schedule.
• Using the correct equipment undertake fault finding tasks.
• Complete environmental examinations against detailed specifications, detailing any issues found.
• Undertake basic servicing e.g. brake pads, air filters, oil etc.
• Carry out repairs or additional work arising from the examination (mechanical, electrical or vehicle building).
• Carry out general cosmetic repairs in the carriages, such as changing light fittings and door locks and replacing windows, trim and Iino.
• Set up electrical contact tips.
• Refuel the units checking and topping up all levels as required.
• Paint the units both internally and externally within South West Trains specifications.
• Prepare trains for service ensuring a clean and presentable environment.
• Using appropriate paperwork record work carried out and sign on completion.
• Obtain, use, care for and return all tools and equipment used.
• Advise Production Manager/Supervisor of any problems or defects identified and any work arising from the issues.
• Undertake Depot Protection responsibilities as required.
• Work effectively as part of a team.
• Carry out depot shunting requirements as directed.
• Additional tasks as specified by duty Production Manager.

Safety Responsibilities:

• Ensure your personal safety and that of others at all times.
• Comply with all safety systems and responsibilities at all times.
• Develop a pro-active approach to safety issues.
• Report any accidents, assaults or near miss occurrences in accordance with local reporting procedures.
• Report any safety irregularities, faults or unusual occurrences in the prescribed
• Ensure all relevant PPE for tasks/activities is worn at all times and in accordance with local safety instructions/risk assessments.
• Participate in all staff briefings to ensure you are informed of all relevant
• You will examine all safety procedures, notices, publications and instructions.

Environmental Responsibilities:

• Ensure compliance with ISO 1400: series Environmental Management System.
• Dispose of waste in accordance with local instructions.
• Segregate hazardous waste from non hazardous waste. Segregate recyclable materials.
• Dispose of bio-waste and sharps in accordance with local instructions.
• Report and clean up all spillages of oil/chemical in accordance with local instructions.
• Report any environmental incidents to duty Production Manager.
• You will examine all environmental procedures, notices, publications and instructions.

You'll need to be:

• Must have electrical [mechanical experience.
• Must have worked in a workshop environment.
• Good written and oral communication skills.
• Versatility to adapt to a variety of tasks both on and off train.
• Personal Track Safety.
• DC Electrified lines.
• Passed in shunting rules.

Working pattern

4 on 4 off permanent nights - 19.00 PM - 07.00 AM
