South Western Railway Welcomes 27 New Apprentices Across the Business

Oct 1 2026

South Western Railway is delighted to welcome 27 new apprentices who have joined the business during the past month across our Young Talent, Leadership and Engineering Apprenticeship programmes.

This year's intake reflects the wide range of opportunities available at SWR, with apprentices joining teams across the organisation in customer-facing, operational, specialist support, engineering and leadership development roles. Together, they represent the next generation of railway professionals and leaders who will help shape the future of our business.

Among the new starters are 18 apprentices joining our Young Talent and Leadership programmes. These apprentices will gain valuable experience while contributing to the delivery of safe, reliable and customer-focused services across the network. Alongside those beginning their professional careers, colleagues undertaking Leadership Apprenticeships will further develop the skills, confidence and knowledge needed to lead teams and drive continuous improvement throughout the organisation.

We are also pleased to welcome seven Rail Technician Apprentices and one Paint Spraying Apprentice, who have joined our engineering teams. Based at our Train Care Depots in the Isle of Wight, Wimbledon, Salisbury and Bournemouth, they will learn from experienced colleagues while working towards nationally recognised qualifications and helping to maintain and present our fleet.

Apprenticeships play a vital role in developing the skills, knowledge and capabilities needed for both individual success and the long-term future of the railway. Through a combination of practical experience, structured learning, technical training and mentoring, our apprentices will build rewarding careers while making a meaningful contribution to SWR from day one.

At South Western Railway, we are committed to investing in people and creating pathways for growth and development. Our apprenticeship programmes are a key part of that commitment, helping us attract, develop and retain talented individuals from a wide range of backgrounds while nurturing the skills our industry needs for the future.

We look forward to following the progress of this outstanding cohort and supporting them throughout their apprenticeship journey.

Welcome aboard, and best of luck to all 27 of our new apprentices as they begin this exciting next chapter with South Western Railway.
