The final Revenue Inspection Device (RID) training course for Metro Guards was held in October, at the Basingstoke Campus, following a year-long programme. All of our Metro Guards have now learnt the skills required to operate the RIDs following the Guards Agreement in 2021 which saw the duties of the Metro Guard grade enhanced to include ticket checking on all services.

The courses have been run by the Train Service Project team, which has also overseen the installation of the RIDs to depots and provided support to the Metro Guards as they have become familiar with the new procedures. “It has been a mammoth task to bring in new equipment and train a large proportion of our On Train Service community,” Keith Hawkins, Train Service Project Manager said.

“Around 320 Metro Guards have been released for a day-long course which covered the use of the RID, as well as a briefing on basic ticketing and a refresher on conflict awareness. We are already seeing a vast improvement in revenue income and higher visibility scores across the Metro area.”
