Across the network, our Train Presentation teams form one of the most essential foundations of our daily operation. From the first train of the morning to the last service of the night, they ensure every unit is clean, safe and ready to welcome customers. Their work plays a vital part in the smooth running of the railway, and its impact is visible on every journey.
As soon as a train enters the depot, our teams assess what the unit needs, whether it is a quick turnaround or a full interior and exterior clean. With strict timescales to meet, the team works with purpose and coordination to prepare every train to the standards our customers expect.
This work is supported by specialist teams across the network. At Waterloo, our direct Train Presentation team meets units as they arrive into the station. They walk through each train, litter picking, refreshing passenger areas and topping up toilet stock to keep facilities usable throughout the day.
In transit teams operate across the network while trains are in service. They move between units collecting rubbish, wiping spills and responding to issues as they arise. Station based colleagues at locations such as Windsor, Reading and Portsmouth Harbour also provide rapid support while trains turn around in service. Together, these teams help maintain a clean and comfortable environment inside the carriages, ensuring facilities are refreshed and surfaces and seating areas are cared for throughout the day.
Exterior cleaning is just as important. From removing dirt and debris to tackling graffiti, our teams work hard to ensure every train presents well on the network. A clean exterior sets the tone before customers even step on board, and the team takes real pride in making sure each unit looks its best. Their work helps create a pleasant, welcoming environment that supports a positive journey from start to finish.
Professionalism and calm confidence define the team’s approach. They handle routine tasks and unexpected challenges with the same level of care, supporting colleagues across the business when disruption occurs.
As Rianna explains, “The Train Presentation team pull together as one and work incredibly hard in all conditions to ensure trains are presented in the very best condition. Each and every member of the team have such a positive attitude despite a very difficult task at hand, it has been a pleasure to work alongside the Wimbledon Train Presentation Team.”
Communication is central to how the team works. Information is shared quickly, activity is recorded accurately and colleagues support one another to meet high expectations. Regular briefings and ongoing development help the team grow in skill and confidence, while a strong culture of improvement encourages new ideas and better ways of working.
The work they do directly shapes the customer experience. A clean, well prepared train builds trust in the service and supports performance and reliability across the network. Team members often speak about the pride they take in their role and the difference they make each day. “There is a sense of achievement at the end of the day and working in Train Presentation has given me career opportunities that I have never had before”, reflects Aimee, highlighting the meaningful impact the role can have on personal and professional development.
Our Train Presentation teams are an essential part of our railway family. Their dedication, care, and commitment to high standards ensure that every train we deliver is ready for the customers who depend on us. As we continue to invest in our people and our depots, their work remains central to delivering a railway that feels cared for, one train at a time.
