SWR and the
Military Community

Supporting the Armed Forces Community

At South Western Railway, we have signed the Armed Forces Covenant and are proud to show our commitment to the Armed Forces community.

The Covenant is a national promise to ensure that those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces, and their families, are treated fairly and with respect.

Cadets

We have held career insight events with Cadets in Salisbury.  In addition to hosting site tours for the Cadets of the local station and depot to give an insight into the day to day running of the railway and the different equipment and processes we have, we also supported the cadets in learning about getting a career in the railway by giving information on the various careers available and also had employees available to answer any questions.

We also covered employability training including discussing key employment skills.  This included information on applying for roles, guidance on CV writing, covering skills that transfer into the different roles on the railway, also interview tips and advice.

We also offer mock interviews to any cadets who would like to undertake some practice to help them in the future.

Armed Forces Week

We have celebrated Armed Forces Week at Waterloo Station the last two years jointly with Network Rail.

In addition to having representatives from both companies present, we had military pipers putting on crowd drawing performances! SSAFA were also able to carry out some great fundraising on the days.

South Western Railway have a network supporting the military community called SERVED.

The SERVED Network is committed to providing support and camaraderie to all ex serving military personnel and their families, connecting colleagues across the network who have shared experiences of serving their country.

Signing the Armed Forces Covenant

The Armed Forces Covenant is a national commitment to ensure fair treatment for members of the Armed Forces, veterans, and their families.

It fosters a culture of mutual respect and understanding between the public, government, and the Armed Forces community. We believe that signing the Armed Forces Covenant is a tangible way to demonstrate our commitment and encourage others to do the same.

Signing the Covenant is also a free and straightforward process and holds many benefits.  Companies large and small can sign up to the Armed Forces Covenant and if anyone would like any further information on what is involved please do reach out at armedforces@swrailway.com or click on the link below:

Military Testimonials

SWR’s commitment to the military community is also reflected in the active Armed Forces Network, made up of colleagues with military backgrounds.

Emma Cook

Customer Experience Training Manager Emma Cook, joined the Army at 18 and was posted to the 1st Regiment Royal Horse Artillery in Tidworth.

“I was a Battery Clerk and the first female to parade with an Artillery Battery. One of my highlights was being in the field on an AS90 Gun. It was interesting to witness the reactions of soldiers from other units – a female soldier in a front-line role on exercise was not done back then!”

“The military way of life remains a strong part of who I am. My husband is still serving and is frequently away – in the last two years alone, he has been home for about three months. Despite the challenges this brings, it’s a life I wouldn’t trade. Adding to my family’s military connection, my son is serving in the Air Force. I truly appreciate the support that SWR provides to the ex-military community and their families.”

-Emma Cook, Customer Experience Training Manager

Mick Hughes

“After 26 years of service in the Army, finishing my career as an Artificer Sergeant Major, Warrant Officer Class One in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, stepping away from the military was one of the most significant life changes I’ve ever faced. I’d spent over two decades in a world defined by discipline, structure, and a deep sense of belonging. Leaving that behind was daunting — I was nervous, unsure of what civilian life would look like, and worried about whether I’d ever find the same sense of purpose again.

But joining South Western Railway changed everything. I quickly realised that the skills I’d developed in the Army — leadership, problem-solving, resilience, and technical expertise — were not only transferable, they were highly valued. That realisation gave me confidence and helped ease the transition. Of course, I missed the military family, but what I didn’t expect was to find a new one here at SWR. The people at SWR welcomed me, and I found myself surrounded by colleagues who shared the same commitment, camaraderie, and drive to make a difference."

"There’s a newfound freedom at SWR, but the challenges are still there — and that’s a good thing. The railway is fast-paced, dynamic, and full of opportunities to grow. I’ve met some truly amazing people who’ve inspired me and helped me thrive in my new career. I’m incredibly thankful to have been given this opportunity, and I genuinely love what I do now.

One of the things I’m most proud of is assisting to build our ex-forces network at SWR. It’s a space where veterans can connect, support each other, and find their footing in the railway industry. We’ve created something special — a bridge between two worlds — and it’s making a real difference for those who are just beginning their journey out of the military. If you’re a veteran wondering what’s next, I can tell you this: there’s a place for you here.”

-Mick Hughes, Senior Safety Manager

Richard Spencer-Fleet

"Having Served 24 Years in the Royal Electrical & Mechanical Engineers in the British Army as a Mechanic, it was only a natural step to move into an industry of heavy equipment. I’ve been with SWR since February 2024 and I received the most welcoming introduction, everyone made me feel part of a team straight away. I’ve felt that my experience from the British Army has impacted my area of responsibility by bringing something extra to the table."

"My transition from being a soldier to a civilian felt seamless and I believe this is due to the similar Values and standards but also behaviours they both share. At this point I would recommend SWR to any service leaver as the key skills service personnel gain are so valuable and welcomed to the rail industry."

-Richard Spencer-Fleet, Train Presentation Manager
